Welborne News - May 29, 2017
New Administrative Team:  We are pleased to Welcome Ann-Marie Lacoursiere as our new Principal in September.  Ann-Marie is an experienced Principal who comes to us from Glenburnie Public School.  We are also delighted to welcome back Scott McFarlane as our Vice-Principal.  Scott was our Vice-Principal from 2014-2016 and has been on leave this year.  Welborne will be in great hands as Ms. Lawn retires and Mrs. Raeburn-Gibson continues her work in education outside of the School Board.
Traffic Blocking Pathways: Please park in designated spots on the street.  Our cyclists, walkers and strollers need clear access to our walkways.  We have more people walking and cycling now that the weather is better.
Schedule for 2017-18:  As promised, we conducted a review of our current schedule.  We met with staff, surveyed parents/guardians, spoke to all students from grades 2-8 and gathered feedback.
Through this process, we realized that there are things that we could be doing better – especially around communication and nutrition breaks.  Our daily schedule is listed in the front pages of the student agenda, in addition to being sent home earlier in the year. There were questions about picking up students for appointments.  When students are picked up at 1:00, they only miss 1/3 of instructional time, instead of ½.  For morning appointments, if students arrive at school by 11:30, they still get 2/3 of their instructional day.
There were also questions about what to eat when.  If parents pack a variety of healthy foods, students will eat in the order that works for them.  Many of our students are running out of food by second nutrition break.  We do have a limited amount of food, provided by the Food Sharing Project to ensure no student goes hungry.
We would also like to stress, that if there are any concerns about nutrition breaks, to please contact your child’s teacher.  Our system is very flexible and allows for additional eating time if required.  Many teachers are also incorporating a ‘corner snack’, so students eat when they are hungry.  We are happy to provide alternate times or a quiet space to eat if needed.  Our new timetable has increased learning time and is safer for students, not to mention more streamlined during snowsuit season!
The timetable for 2017-18 will be the same as this year:  Students will have two active recesses (30 minutes) followed by 15 minute ‘nutrition breaks’.  The day will begin at 9:05 and end at 3:35.  Students who go ‘home for lunch’ will continue to have 2 choices – 10:45 – 11:30 and 1:10-1:50. Students need written permission to leave the site.
Moving this summer?   If your family is moving this summer, please let us know.  Unless we hear from you, we’ll assume that all students are returning.  If you move without informing us, that will leave gaps in our classes in September and may necessitate a re-organization.
Kindergarten Registrations:   If your child will be 4 or 5 by the end of December, please register. You will need a birth certificate, health card and immunization record.  If you are missing one of the documents, please register anyway.  Our ‘Discover Kindergarten’ open house will take place on June 22 at 4:30.
Welborne Showcase:  The dress rehearsal will take place on Monday, June 5 during the day.  The show will take place Tuesday, June 6 during the  afternoon but we are not able to offer an evening presentation.  We apologize for the inconvenience and hope that any interested parents/guardians can join us at 2:00.

Our next School Council meeting will take place Tuesday, June 13 from 6:15 – 7:30.  School Council is looking for volunteers for the year-end barbecue.  If you would like to volunteer for the ‘Child Find’ Clinic, you will need a Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.  Please text Crystal at 613-328-7920 if you can help out.

Vesey’s Bulbs:  If you are expecting a back order, please call Mrs. Blower at the office.

Allergies – Please do not send nuts, peanuts or peanut butter into the school.  Asthma – Students are now able to carry and administer (with parent permission) their own asthma medication (puffers).
