We hope you enjoyed a restful long weekend and managed to experience all four seasons along the way—from sunshine and spring breezes to surprise rain, chilly winds, and even SNOW! Climbers were closed today as a result of the snow but will be available for students to use as soon as it is safe to do so. Please see the details below about some very exciting events that the School Advisory Council (Parent Council) is planning for families and caregivers. This week at school, students will be voting for which movie they want to see on the big screen in the gym during the Family Movie Night. The winning movie, which will be shown next Thursday, April 16, will be announced in next week's edition of The Word. As we settle back into our routines, it’s wonderful to see smiling faces filling our halls and classrooms once again. As our feathered friends waddle their way around the schoolyard, we’re reminding students to admire them from a safe distance and to never chase or crowd them. With a little peace and quiet, we’re hopeful the ducks will choose our courtyard as the perfect spot to hatch their springtime family.Please take a moment at home to chat about treating wildlife with kindness and respect—together we can help keep both ducks and students safe.<hr><h2 class="editor-heading-h2">🧣 A Quick Reminder About Spare Clothing</h2><img src="/images/5558a62e-b797-47c2-8a37-7b7d9ab8555f" alt="images (1)" width="162" height="231" style="width:162px;height:231px;display:inline-block;float:right">As we move through the messy, muddy days of early spring, we’re asking families to send a spare set of clothing in your child’s backpack. This helps us keep students comfortable throughout the day and avoids the need to call home if a change is needed.Please also check backpacks each evening for any wet or muddy items that may have come home so they can be replaced for the next day.<h3 class="editor-heading-h3" dir="ltr">🌧️ Staying Out of Mud and Puddles</h3>We’re reminding students to avoid mud patches and puddles during outdoor play. While we know the temptation is real, staying clear helps prevent slips, soggy socks, and mid‑day outfit changes. The Charity BINGO raises a lot of funds for the school and is the primary source of funds that support the many . If you are able to volunteer for two hours occasionally at the BINGO hall on Bath Road, we would welcome your help! There is on-line training that needs to be done before your first shift. During your first shift, you would work with two experienced volunteers who will show you the ropes. Volunteers walk around the area where BINGO is being played, greeting the guests, being friendly and clearing food trays as needed. The tasks are very simple and the time commitment is only two hours on the days that you sign-up. We ask that all children arrive on time and join their class cohort in their designated zone. Late arrivals can disrupt classroom routines—especially as students are still learning the flow of morning entry and settling in.If your child does arrive late, please ensure they sign in at the office and proceed promptly to class. To support a calm and focused transition, we kindly encourage parents and guardians to keep drop-offs brief. A quick goodbye helps us guide students directly to their classrooms and maintain a consistent start to the day.If you remain in the front lobby with your child, we assume you are actively engaged with them. In these moments, staff may step away to assist other students who are already in the process of transitioning to class. Whether your child is away due to illness, a family commitment, or participating in a school activity such as a sports tournament, it’s important that their absence is recorded. For students attending school-sponsored events, coaches or supervising teachers will update attendance records so these absences do not count against them. However, we still ask families to report these absences through School Messenger to help us maintain accurate records and confirm each student’s whereabouts. Your cooperation supports a safe and organized school environment.To report an absence, use one the following methods:<h3 class="editor-heading-h3" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;">School Messenger application</h3><ol class="editor-list-ol"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr">Use the email address you provided to the school.</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr">Use your mobile device to download and install the free SchoolMessenger blue app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, the <a href="https://go.schoolmessenger.com/#/home" target="_blank" title="SchoolMessenger website" class="editor-link" dir="ltr">SchoolMessenger website portal</a>, or from within the LDSB mobile app.</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;">Tap Sign Up to create your account. For any school day in the school term up to the cut-off time on the day of the absence. Future absences can be reported at any time using any one of these methods. Please do not call the school directly to report your student's absence.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;">Reporting late arrivals</h2>Parents/caregivers are instructed to report late arrivals using the new Late Arrival option, including the expected arrival time to school. When a student arrives, they are expected to sign in at office and staff make the amendment in our student information system. When a student leaves early, again they are expected to sign out (with parental permission) and again the amendment is made in our system. This method allows us to best track student attendance to ensure safety. The SafeArrival system makes it easier for you to report your student’s absence, reduces the time it takes for our school staff to verify student attendance, and responds to unexpected or unplanned student absences. This time savings makes it faster and more efficient to account for all students and their safety.<hr><div data-lexical-layout-container="true" style="grid-template-columns: 3fr 1fr; display: grid;"><div class="editor-layoutItem"><h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Visitors to Welborne Avenue Public School</h2>We welcome visitors to our school. We do ask that all visitors, parents/guardians included, sign in with the main office and remain in the front lobby until directed/escorted by a staff member. All LDSB elementary schools are equipped with a Safe Welcome system which requires all external doors be locked during the school day. All visitors are required to report to the school’s main entrance and request access using an intercom and buzzer system. When it is necessary for a student to leave school during the day, a note is required from a parent or guardian. The note must be given to the homeroom teacher or the office. If parents/guardians of students are coming to pick up/drop off your child, you are asked to wait at the main office. If necessary, office staff will alert your child’s classroom. The Charity BINGO raises a lot of funds for the school and is the primary source of funds that support the many . If you are able to volunteer for two hours occasionally at the BINGO hall on Bath Road, we would welcome your help! There is on-line training that needs to be done before your first shift. During your first shift, you would work with two experienced volunteers who will show you the ropes. Volunteers walk around the area where BINGO is being played, greeting the guests, being friendly and clearing food trays as needed. The tasks are very simple and the time commitment is only two hours on the days that you sign-up. Whether your child is away due to illness, a family commitment, or participating in a school activity such as a sports tournament, it’s important that their absence is recorded. For students attending school-sponsored events, coaches or supervising teachers will update attendance records so these absences do not count against them. However, we still ask families to report these absences through School Messenger to help us maintain accurate records and confirm each student’s whereabouts. This method allows us to best track student attendance to ensure safety. The SafeArrival system makes it easier for you to report your student’s absence, reduces the time it takes for our school staff to verify student attendance, and responds to unexpected or unplanned student absences. All LDSB elementary schools are equipped with a Safe Welcome system which requires all external doors be locked during the school day. All visitors are required to report to the school’s main entrance and request access using an intercom and buzzer system. When it is necessary for a student to leave school during the day, a note is required from a parent or guardian. The note must be given to the homeroom teacher or the office. The Charity BINGO raises a lot of funds for the school and is the primary source of funds that support the many . If you are able to volunteer for two hours occasionally at the BINGO hall on Bath Road, we would welcome your help! There is on-line training that needs to be done before your first shift. During your first shift, you would work with two experienced volunteers who will show you the ropes. Volunteers walk around the area where BINGO is being played, greeting the guests, being friendly and clearing food trays as needed. The tasks are very simple and the time commitment is only two hours on the days that you sign-up. Whether your child is away due to illness, a family commitment, or participating in a school activity such as a sports tournament, it’s important that their absence is recorded. For students attending school-sponsored events, coaches or supervising teachers will update attendance records so these absences do not count against them. However, we still ask families to report these absences through School Messenger to help us maintain accurate records and confirm each student’s whereabouts. Please do not call the school directly to report your student's absence.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;">Reporting late arrivals</h2>Parents/caregivers are instructed to report late arrivals using the new Late Arrival option, including the expected arrival time to school. When a student arrives, they are expected to sign in at office and staff make the amendment in our student information system. When a student leaves early, again they are expected to sign out (with parental permission) and again the amendment is made in our system. This method allows us to best track student attendance to ensure safety. The SafeArrival system makes it easier for you to report your student’s absence, reduces the time it takes for our school staff to verify student attendance, and responds to unexpected or unplanned student absences. This time savings makes it faster and more efficient to account for all students and their safety.<hr><div data-lexical-layout-container="true" style="grid-template-columns: 3fr 1fr; display: grid;"><div class="editor-layoutItem"><h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Visitors to Welborne Avenue Public School</h2>We welcome visitors to our school. We do ask that all visitors, parents/guardians included, sign in with the main office and remain in the front lobby until directed/escorted by a staff member. All LDSB elementary schools are equipped with a Safe Welcome system which requires all external doors be locked during the school day. All visitors are required to report to the school’s main entrance and request access using an intercom and buzzer system. When it is necessary for a student to leave school during the day, a note is required from a parent or guardian. The note must be given to the homeroom teacher or the office. If parents/guardians of students are coming to pick up/drop off your child, you are asked to wait at the main office. If necessary, office staff will alert your child’s classroom. About Our School

Welcome to Welborne Public School, a Kindergarten to Grade 8 school is located in the west end of Kingston. Our school serves the communities of Auden Park, Waterloo Village and Westpark. Welborne has a strong reputation for excellence in academics and sports. A highly involved School Council works with the staff to create a caring community that supports student achievement. Our school hosts a before and after school program by Frontenac County Child Care. As well, several community groups regularly use our facilities in the evenings.

Limestone DSB Schools to Participate in Kingston Community Climate Action Fund FoodCycler Project

Limestone District School Board schools will participate in this year’s Kingston Community Climate Action Fund (KCCAF) initiative, supported by the City of Kingston and led by Sustainable Kingston. The project aims to turn everyday school lunch waste into meaningful climate action by introducing FoodCyclers in five to seven local elementary schools, with the long-term goal of securing a unit for each elementary school across the City of Kingston. These units will complement existing food-based programming and serve as an additional hands-on learning tool for students.The initiative will help divert organic waste from student snacks and lunches away from landfill.
