This month, students will take part in our remaining Fire and Lockdown safety drills, with staff guiding them through each step in a calm, age‑appropriate way. We’re also looking forward to welcoming families to our Parent Engagement Evening with Make Way For Me—a wonderful opportunity to learn, connect, and grow together. And of course, the spotlight is shining brightly on our student performers as Matilda the Musical Jr. takes the stage May 20–22, with a special evening performance on May 21 at 7:00 p.m. It’s shaping up to be a vibrant and memorable month for our whole school community.Excitement is building for our SAC BBQ on June 5th! Preparations are officially underway, and each class has been given a fun raffle basket theme to bring to life. Families are invited to contribute an item—big or small—to help fill their class basket and make this year’s raffle our best one yet. It’s a simple way to add a little extra sparkle to a favourite Welborne tradition.A reminder to all families that Monday, May 18 is a holiday and the school will be closed. There is no school for students or staff. Classrooms are buzzing with spring projects, outdoor learning is back in full swing, and students seem to be soaking up every bit of sunshine that finds its way onto the yard. It’s a great time to reset, refocus, and enjoy all the growth this season brings.As we move into May, we also wanted to share an update about our mandatory safety drills for the year. Schools are required to complete six fire drills and two lock-down drills annually to ensure everyone knows what to do in an emergency. In the fall, Welborne students successfully completed three fire drills and one lock-down drill. Over the coming month, we will be carrying out the remaining required drills.To help students feel prepared and comfortable, staff will be reviewing procedures and the purpose behind these drills in an age‑appropriate way. For students attending school-sponsored events, coaches or supervising teachers will update attendance records so these absences do not count against them. However, we still ask families to report these absences through School Messenger to help us maintain accurate records and confirm each student’s whereabouts. When a student arrives, they are expected to sign in at office and staff make the amendment in our student information system. When a student leaves early, again they are expected to sign out (with parental permission) and again the amendment is made in our system. This method allows us to best track student attendance to ensure safety. The SafeArrival system makes it easier for you to report your student’s absence, reduces the time it takes for our school staff to verify student attendance, and responds to unexpected or unplanned student absences. This time savings makes it faster and more efficient to account for all students and their safety.<hr><h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">Grade 7 and Grade 8 Lunch Privileges</h2>Historically, the students in grades 7 and 8 have the opportunity to get parent permission to leave the school property during recess/eating break on designated days. Whether your child is away due to illness, a family commitment, or participating in a school activity such as a sports tournament, it’s important that their absence is recorded. For students attending school-sponsored events, coaches or supervising teachers will update attendance records so these absences do not count against them. However, we still ask families to report these absences through School Messenger to help us maintain accurate records and confirm each student’s whereabouts. Your cooperation supports a safe and organized school environment.To report an absence, use one the following methods:<h3 class="editor-heading-h3" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;">School Messenger application</h3><ol class="editor-list-ol"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr">Use the email address you provided to the school.</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr">Use your mobile device to download and install the free SchoolMessenger blue app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, the <a href="https://go.schoolmessenger.com/#/home" target="_blank" title="SchoolMessenger website" class="editor-link" dir="ltr">SchoolMessenger website portal</a>, or from within the LDSB mobile app.</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;">Tap Sign Up to create your account. Please ensure you use the same email address your student’s school has on file. If you do not use that same email address, you will not be able to create an account, or may not be able to see the "Attendance" option. You may have already created an account when we introduced the Communicate broadcast system.</li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;">Select Attendance from the menu, then select Report an Absence and follow the prompts.</li></ol><h3 class="editor-heading-h3" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;">Interactive toll-free telephone</h3><ol class="editor-list-ol"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;">Call 1-855-257-9349 toll-free to report an absence using the automated phone system.</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;">Follow the instructions to report an absence.</li></ol>These options are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For any school day in the school term up to the cut-off time on the day of the absence. Future absences can be reported at any time using any one of these methods. Please do not call the school directly to report your student's absence.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;">Reporting late arrivals</h2>Parents/caregivers are instructed to report late arrivals using the new Late Arrival option, including the expected arrival time to school. When a student arrives, they are expected to sign in at office and staff make the amendment in our student information system. When a student leaves early, again they are expected to sign out (with parental permission) and again the amendment is made in our system. This method allows us to best track student attendance to ensure safety. The SafeArrival system makes it easier for you to report your student’s absence, reduces the time it takes for our school staff to verify student attendance, and responds to unexpected or unplanned student absences. This time savings makes it faster and more efficient to account for all students and their safety.<hr><h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">Grade 7 and Grade 8 Lunch Privileges</h2>Historically, the students in grades 7 and 8 have the opportunity to get parent permission to leave the school property during recess/eating break on designated days. Additional information and a permission form has been sent home to families of students in grade 7 and 8. About Our School

Welcome to Welborne Public School, a Kindergarten to Grade 8 school is located in the west end of Kingston. Our school serves the communities of Auden Park, Waterloo Village and Westpark. Welborne has a strong reputation for excellence in academics and sports. A highly involved School Council works with the staff to create a caring community that supports student achievement. Our school hosts a before and after school program by Frontenac County Child Care. As well, several community groups regularly use our facilities in the evenings.

Limestone Students Shine at the 2026 Ontario Skills Competition

Limestone District School Board students showcased their outstanding skills and talent at the 2026 Skills Ontario Competition, held in Toronto on May 4 and 5, 2026.The Skills Ontario Competition offers a unique opportunity for top students from across the province to demonstrate that they are truly the best in their field. Over two and a half days, competitors impress educators, family members, friends, and potential employers through hands-on, real‑world challenges. Upcoming Family Engagement and Climate Survey

The Limestone District School Board is inviting families to take part in the Family Engagement and Climate Survey. This survey gives families an opportunity to share their experiences with their student’s school and with the school board.The feedback helps us understand what is working well and where we can improve. It also supports schools and school councils in building welcoming, safe, and supportive school communities.The survey includes questions about:<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">How schools communicate and share information</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">Whether families feel welcome, included, and connected</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">Barriers to taking part in school activities, such as time, childcare, language, accessibility, or cost</li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem">Safety and bullying, including reporting and follow‑up</li><li value="5" class="editor-listitem">Licensed Before and After School Programs, including questions to help inform future planning</li><li value="6" class="editor-listitem">Some questions ask about family background to help us better understand different experiences across our communities</li></ul>Participation is voluntary and anonymous. Families may skip any questions they choose. No names or identifying information are collected. Results are shared only as grouped summaries and are used to support learning, planning, and improvement at the board, school, and school council levels.The survey will be open from May 1 to May 11 and will be available online. Dear Families,As we enter the spring season and final third of the school year, we are reminded of this season’s promise of renewal and growth, and the key role schools and families have together in supporting student learning and well-being. This time of <a href="about:blank" class="editor-link">year</a> brings many opportunities for learning both inside and outside of the classroom, along with the return of outdoor extracurricular activities. While this week has been very wet and rainy, the warmer temperatures of spring are upon us.  I would like to take this opportunity to share a few important updates with you:P.A. Day – Friday, April 17A reminder to families that tomorrow, Friday, April 17, is a P.A. Day. There will be no classes for students, and we look forward to welcoming them back to school on Monday.Family Engagement and Climate Survey – Coming in MayIn early May, Limestone will be inviting families to take part in a Family Engagement and Climate Survey. The optional survey is anonymous, and families can choose which questions they want to answer.The survey asks about topics such as feeling connected to school, family involvement, safety and bullying, communication, before- and after-school programming, and how technology like artificial intelligence is used in schools.The feedback shared through this survey helps schools and the school board understand what is working well, what could improve, and what may make it harder for some families to take part. Reviewing and analyzing this information helps support safe, welcoming, and inclusive school environments and supports the board’s obligations under the Ontario Human Rights Code. The findings support planning and decision-making that promotes equity, well being, and student success across Limestone schools. An overview of the Student Census 2025 was presented to the Board of Trustees at last night’s board meeting.
